Gongguan Handmade Tea, a local favorite in Tainan, has reached a milestone – ten years! They've recently moved to a new location, and it's a fresh start for them.
After some moves, they finally settled into their current spot late last year.
The huge corner sign is super eye-catching from far away. The clean design with white space around the name is both attractive and classy.
The bar and decor feature a lot of warm, antique brass and wood elements.
The hand-brushed walls have a faded look, like an old-school cafe from the Showa era, with that smoky, coffee-stained vibe.
[Menu]
A lot of people don't know that Gongguan Handmade Tea offers free boba (tapioca pearls) with drinks 35 NTD and up. There's a sweet little story behind this: the owner used to give kids free boba if they got good grades (80 points or higher), and eventually, they just decided to offer it to everyone.
[Luye Beauty Tea (Single Origin)]
This is a non-toxic red oolong tea from Luye Township in the East Rift Valley, harvested in summer after being bitten by little tea green leafhoppers.
You'll immediately taste the pleasant tea and fresh floral aroma. The aftertaste is sweet, smooth, and not bitter.
[Golden Oolong Latte (Milk Tea)]
I asked the staff to recommend a milk tea with a strong milk flavor, and this was it. The subtle oolong flavor leads the way for the rich, creamy milk. It's so smooth and comforting, you can't help but keep drinking it.
[Lychee Light Oolong (Fruit Tea)]
This one is made with their homemade lychee juice and light oolong tea. Their lychee is seriously amazing. The lychee aroma fills your mouth, and its unique sweetness enhances the oolong. The owner nailed the balance of flavors – neither overpowers the other. If you love lychee, you'll be hooked.
[Fruit Americano (Brewed Coffee)]
This is a combo of fruit juice and coffee (they have lychee, mulberry, pineapple, and guava).
The lychee's sweet, fruity flavor coats the coffee, and it's like eating a lychee-flavored mochi with a coffee filling. The coffee complements the lychee, creating a harmonious, refreshing, and smooth taste.
I like their house-made, real fruit juice series, and they sell the fruit juices themselves too.
[Sicilian Lemon Coffee (Brewed Coffee)]
Freshly squeezed, peel-free lemon juice hits you with a bright, tart flavor that lasts all the way through. The coffee balances it out, resetting your palate for the next sip of lemony goodness.
In the past ten years, with tons of tea shops popping up, Gongguan Handmade Tea has built a loyal following thanks to their high-quality ingredients.
A lot of people don't know that they actually started as a coffee shop. You can still buy the owner's roasted coffee blends and single-origin beans.
Even though their new location is in a competitive area, they're still relatively unknown to many.
That means you can get great tea without the long lines. Every time I see their slogan, 'Why not choose better for the same price?' on my cup, I feel like I'm in on a secret.
